Homecoming Anniversary Celebration!

Alumni, members, students, friends ...

You're invited to celebrate the 40th Anniversary of Immanuel Lutheran Student Center. On Sunday October 18th we'll hold ONE Communion service at 10am at the Student Center (303 North Clay). That's one hour earlier than our usual Student Center worship time!

But ... come early! Come at 9am and get a cup of coffee, and then enjoy the Organ Recital by Dr. Anita Werling at 9:15am. From 9:15-9:45am, Dr. Werling will be presenting works by Bach, Luther, Mendelssohn and Eggert. This will be a wonderful way to begin the celebration.

After the 10am Service, we'll take a picture of all attendees, and then head downstairs for the Dinner and Program. HyVee will cater the dinner. Congregation members are asked to bring a side dish to pass. A freewill donation will be received for the dinner.

Alumni: please be ready to share your memories about your time here at the Student Center. If you cannot attend the Celebration, we ask you to send us an email with your memories about the ministry here.

Lord God, bless Your Word wherever it is proclaimed. Make it a Word of power and peace to convert those not yet Your own and to confirm those who have come to saving faith. May Your Word pass from the ear to the heart, from the heart to the lip, and from the lip to the life that, as You have promised, Your Word may achieve the purpose for which You sent it; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Events this Fall '09 Semester

Our student leaders met this past weekend and set this preliminary schedule for the Fall semester. Some are one-time events, some are weekly. You're welcome at all of them ...

On move-in day, Aug 22, stop by the Student Center (303 N. Clay) and say hello to Pastor if you get a chance.
Sunday, Aug 23 -- 11am Service. "Cinnamon-time" fellowship afterwards.
Mondays at 9pm -- "Horseplay," which is a time to listen to "The Whitehorse Inn" together and see if it generates some discussion of life, theology, faith, and vocation.
Wednesdays at 7pm -- Prayer Service, followed by lounging until Bible Study time
Wednesdays at 8pm -- Bible Study. The topic is TBA.
Sunday, Aug 30 -- 11am Communion Service, followed by Brunch. Waffles will be made to order!
Thursday, starting September 10th -- The Catechism Bible Study called "Our Life in Christ" begins. 7:00-8:30pm for ten weeks.
Saturday, September 12 -- Canoe Trip to the Iowa River. Only $12.
October 17th -- Homecoming parade and game.
October 18th -- the big 40th Anniversary Celebration
Coming later; "Uncle Marty's Ref-Fest", the Thanksgiving Dinner, and a Christmas Break Servant Trip, possibly to NYC.

Welcome back from Spring Break. Here’s the latest about your LCMS campus ministry …

· Lutheran Student Fellowship members enjoyed a great little servant trip to north St. Louis over Spring Break. Hard work and fun times. Did you see the Youtube video above?

· Wednesday, March 25 … 6pm Soup Supper. 7pm Lenten Service. 8pm Galatians Bible Study. All right here at the Student Ctr.

· Thursday, March 26 … 7pm Bible Study on Confession & Absolution as we look at the Catechism.

· Sunday, March 29^th … 11am Worship with Holy Communion.

· Next Wednesday, April 1^st … Students are in charge of the Lenten Soup Supper. Please volunteer to help by whipping up a pot of soup, or making toasted cheese sandwiches here in the kitchen. Volunteer by email me a reply, please.

· Saturday, April 4^th … Work Party at the Student Center. Noon to 4pm. Please come to the Center and help with spring cleaning inside and out. Lots of help is needed. Light lunch provided.

Let us pray. “Heavenly Father, as our Lenten pilgrimage begins, help us ponder anew Your great love for us revealed in the suffering and death of Your Son. By Your Word, You revealed the depth of our sin and the great cost of our redemption. Confessing our sin, we ask for Your mercy, for it was our transgressions that Jesus carried to the cross. Help us remember that we are dust and to dust we shall return, and grant us always to rejoice in the life You give, through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.”

Welcome back, students and staff! May the Lord grant us a rich semester of learning, fellowship, grace, mercy, and peace.

Sundays:
11am Service! Lord's Supper on 2nd & 4th Sundays. If you prefer an earlier Service, come to Immanuel CHURCH at 8:30am (906 E. Grant Street)

Mondays:
4-5pm : "Horseplay" Enjoy a cup of coffee or tea, sit back, and listen to an episode of "The Whitehorse Inn."

Wednesdays:
7pm "Lesson Planning" is a gathering in which we look ahead to the Scripture Lessons we will hear on Sunday in Service. For 45 minutes we read the lessons, dig deeper into them, glean prayer requests, sing a couple of hymns, and enjoy the fellowship.
8-9pm Galatians Bible Study

Thursdays:
7:00-8:30pm Our Life in Christ Bible Study. This is a study of the foundations of the Christian Faith, using Luther's Small Catechism. We meet for eleven weeks. All are welcome. It's great for long-time Lutherans and anyone interested in learning what we believe and why.

Our Life in Christ Study begins in January

All are welcome to join in this Bible Study that explores the foundations of the Christian faith. It begins Thursday, January 22, 2009. 7-8:30pm at Immanuel Lutheran Student Center.

How does a person learn more about what LCMS Lutherans believe and/or become a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church?

 By the Sacrament of Baptism children and adults become baptized members of God’s family and our fellowship.

 Youth are taught the foundations of the Christian faith according to Luther’s Small Catechism, usually during grades 6, 7, and 8, preparing for Junior Confirmation. Through this learning process, one becomes a confirmed member of the congregation and is admitted to participation in the Lord’s Supper.

 Adults not previously instructed and confirmed in the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod participate in the “Our Life in Christ” Bible Study, a twelve-lesson study of the Bible and Luther’s Small Catechism. Those who have learned what the congregation confesses, teaches, and practices have the opportunity to become confirmed members of Immanuel, if they wish. All are welcome to participate in this study, with no expectation or obligation to join the church. However, we would rejoice to have you walking with us in faith in the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit!

 The next 12-week series of this class begins at 7pm Thursday, January 22, 2009 at Immanuel Student Center, 303 N. Clay St.

Our Life in Christ
Catechism Bible Study

Lesson I
• Introduction to the Bible and Catechism. Knowing about God. Knowing God. Luke 15:11-32. Is there one way to heaven? Law and Gospel.
Lesson II
• Commandments 1, 2, 3. American “idols.” Bad and good ways to use God’s name. Reasons to be thankful. Do we have to worship on Sunday? What’s a Sabbath? Honoring God’s Word.
Lesson III
• Commandments 4, 5, 6, 7. Love for God. Love for neighbor. Who has authority for me on earth? What about murder, hatred, abortion, and taking care of my body? God’s gift of sexuality and marriage. What about divorce? Have I stolen anything? How can I be a better steward?
Lesson IV
• Commandments 8-10. Gossip. Reputation. Standing up for my neighbors’ honor. Coveting and the gift of contentment. Actual sin. Original sin. Sins of omission and commission. The purposes of the Law. Revisiting Law and Gospel.
Lesson V
• Apostles’ Creed. God the Father. Creation. Angels. The Fall into sin.
Lesson VI
• Apostles’ Creed, Second article. The nature and the work of Jesus, the Christ. Was Jesus damned? Did he bodily rise from the grave, or just spiritually? The return of Christ.
Lesson VII
• Apostles’ Creed, third Article. The person and work of the Holy Spirit. What is “the Church”? What about different Christian denominations? The central doctrine of the faith: Justification by grace, through faith, for Christ’s sake. Will my body be resurrected? Eternal life now and forever.
Lesson VIII
• Prayer. Are all prayers heard by God? God answers every Christian prayer. How should I pray? Do I have to forgive someone who sins against me? What’s the greatest evil? Does “Amen” mean the end?
Lesson IX
• The Sacrament of Baptism. What’s a sacrament? Should infants be baptized? What happens in baptism? Should you be re-baptized once you’ve come back to the faith? Can I be immersed? Must I be baptized? How do I live my baptism every day?
Lesson X
• Confession, Absolution, and the Office of the Keys. What is repentance? Whose sins are forgiven? Why can’t women be ordained into the pastoral office? Is a pastor a servant or a lord? Should we ever excommunicate a person from the church? I don’t want to know if your church is friendly, I want to know if it’s forgiving.
Lesson XI
• The Sacrament of the Altar – Holy Communion. The real presence of Christ in the Lord’s Supper. How should I prepare? Why close communion? Am I worthy? What are the benefits of the Lord’s Supper?
Lesson XII
• A brief history of Martin Luther, and the Lutheran Church. Wrap up. Loose ends. What next?

This is a great weekend in Macomb. The streets are busy with new and returning students. For a few hours Adams Street is closed for move-in to Linc/Wash, our neighbors have moved in, and the Student Center is set to welcome students. Things are buzzing, and I'm excited.

Looking ahead to this semester's campus and congregational ministry, I'm pondering this verse: "For the message of the Cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God." 1 Corinthians 1:18 We'll gather around -- and proclaim -- that Cross for the salvation of all sinners.

Welcome, students. This will be great semester.

Members of Lutheran Student Fellowship served their neighbors with God's mercy through Camp Restore May 11-15. Our principal job was hanging sheetrock in the gutted home of a fellow Lutheran in East New Orleans.
