Friday, Jan 27, some of our friends from Wittenberg Lutheran Center in Normal will be coming over to spend the night here with us at our Center. Just for fun and friendship. Bible and Study and Prayer at the Close of the Day, too. Come at 7pm and stay 'til breakfast the next morning. Bring a pillow and blanket (or sleeping bag). Good times!

Just a reminder for all of you about some up coming events:

- January 20th is the Game Night at the Student Center. It starts at 7 p.m. and is schedule to end at 10 p.m. We have board games as well as some video games that we can play. Feel free to bring your favorite game! Snack food will be available too!

- January 25th is the Student Actives Fair. It's from 3-5 and LSF will be there, giving out apples, as usual. Stop by and say hi!

-January 27th is the annual Wittenburg Lutherans All-Nighter! This year the good people from Wittenburg will be coming to Macomb. This All-Nighter will start at 7 p.m. on the 27th and end at 9 a.m. on the 28th. The night will consist of games, yummy food, bible study, possibly even bowling.

Our ROMANS Bible Study at 8pm Wednesdays resumes this week. We'll meet downstairs in the LSF lounge. This is a fine time to start coming to this Bible Study of one of the most important parts of God's Word. All are welcome.

Game Night this Friday, January 20. Come to the Student Ctr at 7pm and we'll have snacks and games -- board games, video games, ping pong, pool, and foosball. Hang out.

Advent

Welcome back from break. Now you press on to finish the semester. And we have a great way to help you in these busy days: Advent.

Observe Advent by taking more time for worship, study, and prayer. Add Wednesday evening vespers to your weekly routine. Vespers at 7pm, and the Soup Supper at 6pm, are held at our Church across town at 906 East Grant St:

Our Advent Vespers theme is "Savior Of The Nations, Come!" from Isaiah 40:1-11. These services are usually about thirty minutes long.

After Vespers, our Romans Bible Study will begin at 8:15pm, back at the Student Center (303 N Clay). If you need a ride to or from the Church, we can help. Just let us know.

Saturday, Dec 3, come to the Student Center and help decorate for Advent/Christmas from 3-5pm. And free supper afterward.

Slow down. Add worship, study, and prayer to your Advent.

Special Service time this week

Hey, please don't forget.

This Sunday, November 6th, we will hold Service at the Student Center at 10am. But don't despair, because you also have to set your clock back one hour before bed on Saturday night ... so you're not missing any sleep with this 10am start time. This is our semi-annual "Joint Service." Bible Study at 9am. Worship at 10am. And a celebration dinner at 11:30am.

Romans, Reformation, and "Fall Back"

Wednesday Bible Study (8-9pm) is now on the Epistle to the Romans. Come study one of the most foundational books of the Bible!

Reformation Sunday -- October 30. We live by Grace Alone, Faith Alone, Scripture Alone. And "Immanuel" (God is with us).

On Sunday, November 6, we will hold just ONE Service at 10am -- on the clock. Our whole congregation comes together in one Service at 10am at the Student Center. But remember to "fall back" by setting your clock BACK one hour the night before. The good news: your body will think it's 11am when you come for 10am Service. Or, in other words, this is no earlier than any other Sunday! We'll have a free Anniversary Celebration Dinner following the Service.

...a visit from Pastor Ken Mangold and his family on September 25th for St. Michael & All Angels. Pastor Mangold was baptized here at this font while a student at WIU, then was later ordained in the Chapel, too!

Catechism, Canoe, Koinonia

It was great to be back in Macomb for Services this past Sunday. This week is replete with good things ...

Tuesday night Horseplay (9pm)
Wednesday night Bible Study (8pm, Law and Gospel)
the start of a new series of Catechism Bible Studies on Thursday from 7:00-8:30pm at the Student Center. Come to this study if you want to lean more about LCMS Lutheranism, or to review what you learned and confessed through Confirmation years ago. ALL are welcome.
A Canoe Trip on saturday. Meet at the Student Center at 9am Saturday. $5 gets you a canoe and lunch! We'll be canoeing locally at either Spring Lake or Lake Argyle. After canoeing, we'll make a fire and cook our lunch. Sign up by emailing lutheran@macomb.com OR as a comment to this post. You must sign up so we have ample canoes lined up.
Koinonia is the word for our LIFE TOGETHER as the Body of Christ. We live in it at the Lord's Supper, in confessing the same thing in worship and in the Book of Concord, and Bible Study.

This is a great week. Work hard, have fun,. Confess Christ on campus.

Our guest preacher this Sunday, September 4th, will be Pastor Larry Bell, who has coordinated our servant events in North St. Louis the past two years. We want you to get involved here in worship, Bible Study, and fellowship events, because "what you feed grows, and what you starve dies." Maybe you went through the one-page Bible study we sent out which ended with those words. It's true!

Feed the Christian faith God gave you in Holy Baptism.
To that end, please regularly use the Google calendar to the right. It has all the news on what we have to offer -- Services, studies, daily prayer times, and events to foster friendship.

Boy, it's good to have students coming back to campus. The quietness of the summer is nice, but the start of another semester is even better. People are moving into the houses in the neighborhood around the student center, RAs are buying supplies at WalMart (saw some Tanner RAs at 11pm last night and Kathy and I wanted to say to them, "hey, we met when we were RAs in Tanner 29 years ago!"), and we're getting the building ready for ministry again.

11am Sunday Service this week will bring new and old students, some parents who have stayed after the move-in, and congregational families together around the Word of God's Law and Gospel. Some students might be with us in our 8:30 Service over at the Church, and that will be great, too.

After the 11am Service we'll have "Cinnamon Time" so you can stay and visit with friends. Coffee and coffee cake. Lutheran essentials almost.

Wednesday Bible Study at 8pm will kick off a six week study of Law and Gospel. At least one student suggested this topic, because it teaches us all how to read the Bible for understanding. It's also in conjunction with the 200th birthday of this man:

C.F.W. Walther. He wasn't handsome, but he was wise, and he left us a legacy of reading God's Word in a way that truly comforts sinners with the truth. Join us for Bible Study from 8-9pm on Wednesday. The study will be great, and the fun and friendship complements that.

Here it is again -- the end of the academic year. Grads are ready to walk and to take up a new vocation. Many are ready to move home for a few months, only to come back in the summer and begin another year of learning and campus ministry. God bless you all.

The last two Bible Studies of the year are tonight and Wednesday, May 11th. We'll wrap up our study of the Gospel of St. Matthew.

Holy week Services were wonderful. The easter Dinner at the parsonage included a table for 17. It was delicious and fun. And, of course, many students were able to home for Easter, so we missed you. Welcome back. here's hoping you finish the semester strongly!

Don't forget: this Sunday, May 1st, there will be no service at the Student Center.

Instead, we all gather at the CHURCH: 906 East Grant Street
at 10AM (one hour earlier than usual).

Holy Week

Palm Sunday was a rich beginning to this Holy Week. Now, come together with us here at the Student Center for Wednesday's Bible Study (8:15pm), Friday's Noon Prayer Service, and Sunday's celebration of our Lord's Resurrection. We also invite students to join us for an Easter Dinner at the parsonage following the 11am Service.

At the CHURCH we also have 7pm Services on Maundy Thursday and Good Friday.

Lent begins

The past four weeks have been replete with good things around here, we just haven't posted any of them here. Sorry. The Christ on Campus Weekend at Indiana was great, and so have the Bible Studies, Horseplay, and social gatherings. The Lounge has been updated tremendously. Use it for movie nights, gaming, and friendship. The new carpet on the first level is wonderful. And, we have been meeting for daily prayer in the University Union Chicago Room at 7:30am, M-F.

Now Lent begins, a time for meditation on our Lord's Passion, prayer, and mercy.

Midweek Lenten Services are held in the Student Center Chapel every Wednesday night at 7pm. Soup Supper begins at 6pm in the basement. All are welcome. Oh, and Bible Study in the Gospel of Matthew is at 8:15pm.

Our Lenten theme: "Not Our Plans -- HIS Plan." Come.

... of snow. Which just may remind you of Isaiah 1:18, the promise of God's mercy and grace for all who repent.

It's a been a great week, with last weekend's trip to ISU, some time off, good reading, and nice help. Thanks to all who showed up Wednesday night to help with the shoveling at the Student Center. The snowblower died, and we had to resort to manual labor. Thanks.

Next weekend is the roadtrip and retreat at Indiana University. We depart at 1pm Friday and return Saturday night around midnight. Sign up with an email or on the list in the narthex. We must know how many are going. It's going to be fun ... and a great topic: "Law & Gospel" with Dr. Fickenscher.

Sp 2011 week #2

Looks like we have seven of us heading to Illinois State this weekend. We'll leave at 6pm Friday, go to Wittenberg Lutheran Center in Normal, and head back to Macomb Saturday morning.

Bible Study in the Gospel of Matthew has been very nice. What a great group -- about 11 of us walking through the text under the theme "Follow Me."

Thanks to all who stopped by the LSF table at the Activities fair yesterday. The apple machine was a big hit again.

Retreat to Indiana U in two weeks. Sign up, please, so we know what vehicles to take.

Dwight has students working on making use of the Impact Grant funds. Watch for some amazing upgrades in games and fellowship-gathering equipment at the Student Center.

The Gospel is enough. Watch this humorous video, and give thanks that the Gospel IS enough.

It's been a long time.

The town and the student center have been fairly quite. I'm eager to have you back with us. I hope and pray that the Christmas break was refreshing, replete with worship at your home church, mom's good cooking, the joy of giving and receiving presents, and plenty of rest. Road Trip/Retreat to the Christ on Campus event at Indiana University. This retreat is always a fun and informational event, with great speakers and new friends from all over the Midwest. We leave around 2pm Friday, February 11, and return late Saturday night. This year's topic: "Law & Gospel" with Rev. Dr. Carl Fickenscher of our Ft. Wayne Seminary. Good times!

Wednesday Bible Study (8pm) will be held downstairs in the lounge (because it's warmer in the winter!).

The Adult Catechism Class that begins January 27th is going to be held at the CHURCH, across town. Need a ride?

Welcome back! I hope your Thanksgiving break was enjoyable and filled with true thankfulness. In Christ, we can accept all things with thanksgiving. Our family enjoyed being together for a 50th anniversary for my parents, lots of worship together, reunions with the larger families, and -- well -- lots of food.

Here's what's happening this week in our ministry :

"Where is your Treasure?" (Economics and the Christian Faith) ... Dr. Polley's lecture here at the Student Center will be followed by discussion. Informal and open to all. It's great to have one of our members and professors share his insights. This will be Tuesday from 7-8pm.
Midweek Advent Service ... 6pm Soup Supper, 7pm Worship, 7:50pm Choir practice (we sing this Sunday, Dec. 5 -- please join us). All this is Wednesday at the CHURCH, 906 East Grant Street. Need a ride? Email me.
College Bible Study ... Wednesday at 9pm at the Student Center.
The Truth Project ... Thursday at 7pm.

Big Weekend Nov 6 & 7

Friday is "FFF." (First Friday Fellowship). Just a fun time of games and snacks here at the student center. Starts at 7pm.
Saturday is the Work Day (9am to 2pm). We have lots of work to do around your student center, inside and out. Lunch provided.
Sunday is our special worship Service. Service is at 10am (not 11*). Bible Study is at 9am. After the Service, we'll have a fellowship meal in the basement for the whole congregation. Turkey provided. If possible, bring a table decoration.

*but it will feel like 11am Service, because we "fall back" this Sunday morning and gain an hour of sleep. Great timing, eh?

Join us for a challenging study of worldviews. We all have them. Worldviews, that is. The critical question is, "Is mine Biblical?" This 13-session small group study begins Thursday, September 30th at 7pm. The lectures and discussions will be challenging and exciting. The fellowship (and snacks) will also be good. There is no cost, but you have to sign up. And, you should commit to participating in all the sessions (you can make up sessions you miss).

Worship Aug 29 ... with a cookout

This Sunday is the commemoration of the Martyrdom of St. John the Baptist. The true story of John's fearless witness to God's truth - even when it cost him his life -- is a fitting way to go into the Fall semester. On campus and off, we are called to be faithful even to the point of death (Rev 2:10). Though we daily fail, we are counted as faithful for the sake of the one perfect "martyrdom": our crucified and risen Lord. Now made faithful, we are called to be loyal, steadfast, committed, and bold for the Gospel's sake. It will be a great day to worship together at 11am.

After worship, we'll have a good Welcome Back Cookout. Terry has secured a great grill on which to cook the burgers, brats, and dogs (bigger and better than even this). Invite a friend!

Wed Bible Study ...

... will be a course titled, "Lutheran Spirituality: WORD." This week we are getting acquainted and introducing it. On September 1st we dive in. Join us Wednesdays for this 8pm Bible Study at the Student Center. Bring a friend! Here's a bit about the course:

This study is designed as a hearing aid. That is, it is the purpose of this little book to
assist you not only in understanding what God’s Word is and how it functions, but also to
sharpen your skills in listening to our Lord as He speaks in His Scriptures and in preaching
that is governed by the Scriptures. To understand the Scriptures is to stand under the
Scriptures. It is not so much that we interpret the Scriptures but that the Scriptures interpret
our lives. With God’s Law, they convict us of sin, that is, of unbelief. They interpret the
story of our inborn failure to fear, love, and trust in God above all things as the root of all
sin. But the ultimate message of the Bible is the Gospel, God’s own declaration that He is for
us in every way, bestowing on us the forgiveness of sins achieved by His Son’s death on the
cross. Any reading of the Bible that does not end up with Jesus Christ crucified and raised
for our justification misses the mark, for God’s Scriptures were given “to make you wise for
salvation through faith in Christ Jesus” (2 Timothy 3:15). Keep your copy of Luther’s Small
Catechism and your hymnal close at hand as you embark on this study, for they are the two
most important tools that you have to help you stand sure-footed under the Holy Scriptures.

It was a great Sunday morning. Chiefly because God served us with truth and grace. Secondly, we met lots of students. Good to meet parents and siblings, too. Welcome, everyone.

"Horseplay" is what we call it when we meet on Monday nights at 9pm and listen to "The Whitehorse Inn." This 30 minute radio show blends Reformation theology and current issues. If you're a Christian, you need to be in the Lord's House every Sunday, not just to be educated, but to be confronted and forgiven.

Everyone is welcome. If you're an LCMS Lutheran, you need to be here every Sunday. Others in the Body of Christ need you here, too. The Body hurts when one part is missing. The Body is blessed and lively with Jesus as its Head.

· Next Wednesday, April 1^st … Students are in charge of the Lenten Soup Supper. Please volunteer to help by whipping up a pot of soup, or making toasted cheese sandwiches here in the kitchen. Volunteer by email me a reply, please.

· Saturday, April 4^th … Work Party at the Student Center. Noon to 4pm. Please come to the Center and help with spring cleaning inside and out. Lots of help is needed. Light lunch provided.

Let us pray. “Heavenly Father, as our Lenten pilgrimage begins, help us ponder anew Your great love for us revealed in the suffering and death of Your Son. By Your Word, You revealed the depth of our sin and the great cost of our redemption. Confessing our sin, we ask for Your mercy, for it was our transgressions that Jesus carried to the cross. Help us remember that we are dust and to dust we shall return, and grant us always to rejoice in the life You give, through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.”

Sundays:
11am Service! Lord's Supper on 2nd & 4th Sundays. If you prefer an earlier Service, come to Immanuel CHURCH at 8:30am (906 E. Grant Street)

Mondays:
4-5pm : "Horseplay" Enjoy a cup of coffee or tea, sit back, and listen to an episode of "The Whitehorse Inn."

Wednesdays:
7pm "Lesson Planning" is a gathering in which we look ahead to the Scripture Lessons we will hear on Sunday in Service. For 45 minutes we read the lessons, dig deeper into them, glean prayer requests, sing a couple of hymns, and enjoy the fellowship.
8-9pm Galatians Bible Study

Thursdays:
7:00-8:30pm Our Life in Christ Bible Study. This is a study of the foundations of the Christian Faith, using Luther's Small Catechism. We meet for eleven weeks. All are welcome. It's great for long-time Lutherans and anyone interested in learning what we believe and why.

Our Life in Christ Study begins in January

All are welcome to join in this Bible Study that explores the foundations of the Christian faith. It begins Thursday, January 22, 2009. 7-8:30pm at Immanuel Lutheran Student Center.

How does a person learn more about what LCMS Lutherans believe and/or become a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church?

 By the Sacrament of Baptism children and adults become baptized members of God’s family and our fellowship.

 Youth are taught the foundations of the Christian faith according to Luther’s Small Catechism, usually during grades 6, 7, and 8, preparing for Junior Confirmation. Through this learning process, one becomes a confirmed member of the congregation and is admitted to participation in the Lord’s Supper.

 Adults not previously instructed and confirmed in the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod participate in the “Our Life in Christ” Bible Study, a twelve-lesson study of the Bible and Luther’s Small Catechism. Those who have learned what the congregation confesses, teaches, and practices have the opportunity to become confirmed members of Immanuel, if they wish. All are welcome to participate in this study, with no expectation or obligation to join the church. However, we would rejoice to have you walking with us in faith in the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit!

 The next 12-week series of this class begins at 7pm Thursday, January 22, 2009 at Immanuel Student Center, 303 N. Clay St.

Catechism Bible Study

Lesson I
• Introduction to the Bible and Catechism. Knowing about God. Knowing God. Luke 15:11-32. Is there one way to heaven? Law and Gospel.
Lesson II
• Commandments 1, 2, 3. American “idols.” Bad and good ways to use God’s name. Reasons to be thankful. Do we have to worship on Sunday? What’s a Sabbath? Honoring God’s Word.
Lesson III
• Commandments 4, 5, 6, 7. Love for God. Love for neighbor. Who has authority for me on earth? What about murder, hatred, abortion, and taking care of my body? God’s gift of sexuality and marriage. What about divorce? Have I stolen anything? How can I be a better steward?
Lesson IV
• Commandments 8-10. Gossip. Reputation. Standing up for my neighbors’ honor. Coveting and the gift of contentment. Actual sin. Original sin. Sins of omission and commission. The purposes of the Law. Revisiting Law and Gospel.
Lesson V
• Apostles’ Creed. God the Father. Creation. Angels. The Fall into sin.
Lesson VI
• Apostles’ Creed, Second article. The nature and the work of Jesus, the Christ. Was Jesus damned? Did he bodily rise from the grave, or just spiritually? The return of Christ.
Lesson VII
• Apostles’ Creed, third Article. The person and work of the Holy Spirit. What is “the Church”? What about different Christian denominations? The central doctrine of the faith: Justification by grace, through faith, for Christ’s sake. Will my body be resurrected? Eternal life now and forever.
Lesson VIII
• Prayer. Are all prayers heard by God? God answers every Christian prayer. How should I pray? Do I have to forgive someone who sins against me? What’s the greatest evil? Does “Amen” mean the end?
Lesson IX
• The Sacrament of Baptism. What’s a sacrament? Should infants be baptized? What happens in baptism? Should you be re-baptized once you’ve come back to the faith? Can I be immersed? Must I be baptized? How do I live my baptism every day?
Lesson X
• Confession, Absolution, and the Office of the Keys. What is repentance? Whose sins are forgiven? Why can’t women be ordained into the pastoral office? Is a pastor a servant or a lord? Should we ever excommunicate a person from the church? I don’t want to know if your church is friendly, I want to know if it’s forgiving.
Lesson XI
• The Sacrament of the Altar – Holy Communion. The real presence of Christ in the Lord’s Supper. How should I prepare? Why close communion? Am I worthy? What are the benefits of the Lord’s Supper?
Lesson XII
• A brief history of Martin Luther, and the Lutheran Church. Wrap up. Loose ends. What next?

This is a great weekend in Macomb. The streets are busy with new and returning students. For a few hours Adams Street is closed for move-in to Linc/Wash, our neighbors have moved in, and the Student Center is set to welcome students. Things are buzzing, and I'm excited.

Looking ahead to this semester's campus and congregational ministry, I'm pondering this verse: "For the message of the Cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God." 1 Corinthians 1:18 We'll gather around -- and proclaim -- that Cross for the salvation of all sinners.

Welcome, students. This will be great semester.
