Worship Aug 29 ... with a cookout
This Sunday is the commemoration of the Martyrdom of St. John the Baptist. The true story of John's fearless witness to God's truth - even when it cost him his life -- is a fitting way to go into the Fall semester. On campus and off, we are called to be faithful even to the point of death (Rev 2:10). Though we daily fail, we are counted as faithful for the sake of the one perfect "martyrdom": our crucified and risen Lord. Now made faithful, we are called to be loyal, steadfast, committed, and bold for the Gospel's sake. It will be a great day to worship together at 11am.

Wed Bible Study ...
... will be a course titled, "Lutheran Spirituality: WORD." This week we are getting acquainted and introducing it. On September 1st we dive in. Join us Wednesdays for this 8pm Bible Study at the Student Center. Bring a friend! Here's a bit about the course:
This study is designed as a hearing aid. That is, it is the purpose of this little book to
assist you not only in understanding what God’s Word is and how it functions, but also to
sharpen your skills in listening to our Lord as He speaks in His Scriptures and in preaching
that is governed by the Scriptures. To understand the Scriptures is to stand under the
Scriptures. It is not so much that we interpret the Scriptures but that the Scriptures interpret
our lives. With God’s Law, they convict us of sin, that is, of unbelief. They interpret the
story of our inborn failure to fear, love, and trust in God above all things as the root of all
sin. But the ultimate message of the Bible is the Gospel, God’s own declaration that He is for
us in every way, bestowing on us the forgiveness of sins achieved by His Son’s death on the
cross. Any reading of the Bible that does not end up with Jesus Christ crucified and raised
for our justification misses the mark, for God’s Scriptures were given “to make you wise for
salvation through faith in Christ Jesus” (2 Timothy 3:15). Keep your copy of Luther’s Small
Catechism and your hymnal close at hand as you embark on this study, for they are the two
most important tools that you have to help you stand sure-footed under the Holy Scriptures.

Horseplay
It was a great Sunday morning. Chiefly because God served us with truth and grace. Secondly, we met lots of students. Good to meet parents and siblings, too. Welcome, everyone.
"Horseplay" is what we call it when we meet on Monday nights at 9pm and listen to "The Whitehorse Inn." This 30 minute radio show blends Reformation theology and current issues. It's easy and friendly. Come to the Student Center at 9pm. We finish by 10pm, and we'll give you a ride back home. Give it a try. To hear more of The Whitehorse Inn, go to www.whitehorseinn.org.

Whether this Fall 2010 semester will be your first or final one here, you're here to gain a fine education, and to put it to good use in service to your neighbor, for the glory of God.
If you're a Christian, you need to be in the Lord's House every Sunday, not just to be educated, but to be confronted and forgiven.
Everyone is welcome. If you're an LCMS Lutheran, you need to be here every Sunday. Others in the Body of Christ need you here, too. The Body hurts when one part is missing. The Body is blessed and lively with Jesus as its Head.

We're excited to have students, faculty, and staff back with us in full force this week. It's been a good and quiet summer, and we look forward to seeing you...

- Monday, Aug 23: "Horseplay!" we listen to an episode of "The Whitehorse Inn" at 9pm in pastor's study, and enjoy a cup of tea.
- Wednesday at 8pm: Student Bible study ... just getting started.
- Friday, Aug 27 at 6pm: First Friday Fellowship. Pizza and games at the Student Ctr.
- Sunday, Aug 29: after 11am worship, we'll have a cookout to welcome all students, faculty, staff, and congregation members.

Welcome back from Spring Break. Here’s the latest about your LCMS campus ministry …
· Lutheran Student Fellowship members enjoyed a great little servant trip to north St. Louis over Spring Break. Hard work and fun times. Did you see the Youtube video above?
· Wednesday, March 25 … 6pm Soup Supper. 7pm Lenten Service. 8pm Galatians Bible Study. All right here at the Student Ctr.
· Thursday, March 26 … 7pm Bible Study on Confession & Absolution as we look at the Catechism.
· Sunday, March 29th … 11am Worship with Holy Communion.
· Next Wednesday, April 1st … Students are in charge of the Lenten Soup Supper. Please volunteer to help by whipping up a pot of soup, or making toasted cheese sandwiches here in the kitchen. Volunteer by email me a reply, please.
· Saturday, April 4th … Work Party at the Student Center. Noon to 4pm. Please come to the Center and help with spring cleaning inside and out. Lots of help is needed. Light lunch provided.

Lenten Services

Let us pray. “Heavenly Father, as our Lenten pilgrimage begins, help us ponder anew Your great love for us revealed in the suffering and death of Your Son. By Your Word, You revealed the depth of our sin and the great cost of our redemption. Confessing our sin, we ask for Your mercy, for it was our transgressions that Jesus carried to the cross. 7:00-8:30pm Our Life in Christ Bible Study. This is a study of the foundations of the Christian Faith, using Luther's Small Catechism. We meet for eleven weeks. All are welcome. It's great for long-time Lutherans and anyone interested in learning what we believe and why.

Our Life in Christ Study begins in January
All are welcome to join in this Bible Study that explores the foundations of the Christian faith. It begins Thursday, January 22, 2009. 7-8:30pm at Immanuel Lutheran Student Center.
How does a person learn more about what LCMS Lutherans believe and/or become a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church?
By the Sacrament of Baptism children and adults become baptized members of God’s family and our fellowship.
Youth are taught the foundations of the Christian faith according to Luther’s Small Catechism, usually during grades 6, 7, and 8, preparing for Junior Confirmation. Through this learning process, one becomes a confirmed member of the congregation and is admitted to participation in the Lord’s Supper.
Adults not previously instructed and confirmed in the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod participate in the “Our Life in Christ” Bible Study, a twelve-lesson study of the Bible and Luther’s Small Catechism. Those who have learned what the congregation confesses, teaches, and practices have the opportunity to become confirmed members of Immanuel, if they wish. All are welcome to participate in this study, with no expectation or obligation to join the church. However, we would rejoice to have you walking with us in faith in the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit!
The next 12-week series of this class begins at 7pm Thursday, January 22, 2009 at Immanuel Student Center, 303 N. Clay St.

• Introduction to the Bible and Catechism. Knowing about God. Knowing God. Luke 15:11-32. Is there one way to heaven? Law and Gospel.
Lesson II
• Commandments 1, 2, 3. American “idols.” Bad and good ways to use God’s name. Reasons to be thankful. Do we have to worship on Sunday? What’s a Sabbath? Honoring God’s Word.
Lesson III
• Commandments 4, 5, 6, 7. Love for God. Love for neighbor. Who has authority for me on earth? What about murder, hatred, abortion, and taking care of my body? God’s gift of sexuality and marriage. What about divorce? Have I stolen anything? How can I be a better steward?
Lesson IV
• Commandments 8-10. Gossip. Reputation. Standing up for my neighbors’ honor. Coveting and the gift of contentment. Actual sin. Original sin. Sins of omission and commission. The purposes of the Law. Revisiting Law and Gospel.
Lesson V
• Apostles’ Creed. God the Father. Creation. Angels. The Fall into sin.
Lesson VI
• Apostles’ Creed, Second article. The nature and the work of Jesus, the Christ. Was Jesus damned? Did he bodily rise from the grave, or just spiritually? The return of Christ.
Lesson VII
• Apostles’ Creed, third Article. The person and work of the Holy Spirit. What is “the Church”? What about different Christian denominations? The central doctrine of the faith: Justification by grace, through faith, for Christ’s sake. Will my body be resurrected? Eternal life now and forever.
Lesson VIII
• Prayer. Are all prayers heard by God? God answers every Christian prayer. How should I pray? Do I have to forgive someone who sins against me? What’s the greatest evil? Does “Amen” mean the end?
Lesson IX
• The Sacrament of Baptism. What’s a sacrament? Should infants be baptized? What happens in baptism? Should you be re-baptized once you’ve come back to the faith? Can I be immersed? Must I be baptized? How do I live my baptism every day?
Lesson X
• Confession, Absolution, and the Office of the Keys. What is repentance? Whose sins are forgiven? Why can’t women be ordained into the pastoral office? Is a pastor a servant or a lord? Should we ever excommunicate a person from the church? I don’t want to know if your church is friendly, I want to know if it’s forgiving.

a great weekend
This is a great weekend in Macomb. The streets are busy with new and returning students. For a few hours Adams Street is closed for move-in to Linc/Wash, our neighbors have moved in, and the Student Center is set to welcome students. Things are buzzing, and I'm excited.
Looking ahead to this semester's campus and congregational ministry, I'm pondering this verse: "For the message of the Cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God." 1 Corinthians 1:18 We'll gather around -- and proclaim -- that Cross for the salvation of all sinners.
Welcome, students. This will be great semester.
